Cyprian Grabowski, Bartłomiej Celt

Prospective Delegates,

As we kick off the introduction of our Chairpersons, please welcome the one and only Presidency of the Security Council! Having gained years of valuable experience, these gentlemen will be leading the most important committee of our conference with as much expertise as one can possibly have. The topic is particularly important in light of recent conflicts – „Reassuring the implementation of the Geneva Conventions in the light of war crimes committed in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict”.

The four Geneva Conventions are documents codifying the international legal standards for humanitarian treatment in war. They define the rights of civilians, wartime prisoners, and military personnel, and lay out protections for the wounded and sick, as well as for civilians in and around any war zone. Unfortunately, the Israeli-Palestinian war is horrifically brutal, and more worryingly, there are reports of war crimes being committed by both sides of the conflict. To ensure the respectability of international bodies and uphold basic moral values, it is crucial to bolster and reassure the implementation of the Geneva Conventions in light of these war crimes. After the attack on 7th October, many civilians on both sides of the conflict face the harsh realities of warfare, and there are horrifying instances of prisoner executions that must be stopped.

Although this committee will focus on the events of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and analyse any breaches of the Geneva Conventions, it will not work on resolving this conflict, as that is not the issue being discussed. In this committee, the delegates will be able to determine whether current laws and law enforcement, as well as the deterrence of committing war crimes, are adequate. Furthermore, the Security Council at this edition of StetiMUN 2024 will decide in detail the changes needed in law enforcement and the consequences for breaking the Geneva Conventbions.
