Topic: Addressing issues and concerns regarding migrant pushbacks.

Hubert Jaruzel, Piotr Wacławczyk

Prospective Delegates,

Please welcome yet another pair of wonderful Chairpersons – Piotr Wacławczyk and Hubert Jaruzel! They will be overseeing the work of the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees, which will be addressing issues and concerns regarding migrant pushbacks.

The UNHCR is a global organisation under the United Nations created to serve refugees in crisis and emergency cases of refugee influx. It works actively in 136 countries with the aim to seek shelter for millions of displaced people and provide them with humanitarian assistance. Moreover, the UNHCR serves as a great tool for collaboration between governments regarding the refugee status, ensuring every agreement is signed under the rule of law.

In the upcoming StetiMUN edition, the UNHCR will take up the topic of migrant pushbacks. This term refers to an expulsion of migrants from a country which breaches the principles of international law. Although pushbacks are widely viewed as illegal and may expose their victims to dangers to health and life, they are conducted by many states. These countries often deny having done pushbacks or justify them as necessary for the safety of their citizens. Thus, the use of pushbacks remains a source of major controversies and an ongoing worldwide debate.

How can this problem be addressed by the international community? Is there a possibility to achieve a compromise? Join this committee to see if you can solve the issue yourselves and decide the fate of pushbacks!
